Sound Familiar?

Why planners struggle, and what's holding your maintenance team back.

1

Planning is inconsistent or undocumented.

2

Planners are doing other people's jobs instead of their own.

3

No time or training to build effective job plans.

4

Maintenance planning isn't seen as a strategic role.

5

Processes rely too heavily on informal knowledge or outdated practices.

Let's put those challenges behind you.

We've worked with planners in all types of industries, helping them move from frustration and firefighting to confidence and control. This certification is more than training. It's a transformation.

  • A proven framework for job planning
  • Guidance from experienced coaches
  • Increased efficiency during work execution
  • Respect and recognition for the planning function
  • A nationally recognized certification
Why It Works

Boost Planner Knowledge & Skills

Our goal is to improve knowledge and actual job-focused performance. This certification will boost confidence and capability for maintenance planners.

OTJ Application

Built around hands-on, real-world application of in-field exercises supported by individual coaching. You perform tasks on your own equipment, reviewed one-on-one with your coach.

Attend Remotely

Planners experience the pathway remotely in a Wave (a group of 6 students) led by a Marshall Institute coach. Weekly time commitment ranges from 1 to 12 hours.

Coach-led

Each Wave is supported by a Marshall Institute coach who provides guidance, feedback, and growth through group and individual coaching sessions.

Frequently Asked

Common Questions

How does certification work?
The pathway consists of 3 components: educational modules, application practice, and examination. To become an MI-CMP you must complete all knowledge modules and tests, meet all criteria for the application exercises, and pass two final exams (one application, one knowledge).
What is a Wave?
A Wave is a group of students going through the certification pathway together, led by a coach. Each Wave is assigned a specific day of the week — both your individual and group coaching sessions take place on that day, so you can plan around a predictable weekly rhythm throughout the cohort.
How long is the certification pathway?
The pathway consists of 12 active weeks. Chronological duration may vary by a few weeks if holidays fall during the pathway.
How many hours per week do I need to commit?
The weekly commitment ranges from 1 to 12 hours: 1–2 hours of scheduled meetings, 1–2 hours of self-paced training, 1–7 hours of on-the-job activities, and 2–12 hours of exam prep near the end. Many activities tie directly to your daily planning work, so some certification time doubles as work time.
What if there's a holiday week during the Wave?
We typically avoid holiday weeks and don't require learning, exercises, or homework during them. Your coach will communicate holiday weeks.
Can I just take the exams?
No. This is not an ordinary credential. We don't just verify current knowledge; the certification provides a growth pathway to deepen knowledge and competency before verifying you with exams.
What are the certification requirements?
We don't take the title lightly and don't guarantee all students reach it. To earn it you must: complete all mandatory courses and knowledge checks, pass all knowledge tests, meet the application exercise criteria, make up any missed coaching sessions, not fall more than 3 weeks behind, and pass the two certification exams.
